Mary Kom is one of the pioneers of women’s boxing in India. Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom was born on 1st March, 1983 in a small village of Kangathei in the north-eastern state of Manipur. In her childhood, she was not s very good at studies, but she could run fast, threw a javelin to a long distance and could s punch hard. She witnessed the warm welcome and grand felicitations of Dingko Singh, a boxer of her state who had come back with a gold) medal from the Asian Games in Bangkok and was greatly inspired.

She rushed to Sports Authority s of India (SAI) centre in Imphal and pleaded ; Narjit Singh to give her coaching. First she won the Manipur State Women’s Boxing Championship and her career started. Being a women, it was a constant battle for her to overcome prejudice and challenges outside the ring. She could neither buy a kit or had travelling expenses and on the other hand, she had to face discouraging remarks. Gradually her hard work brought her great success.

She became world champion not once, but five times in a row. She also secured bronze medals in Asian Games and Olympics, and a gold medal in Asian Games. The Government of India conferred on her Arjuna Award (2003), Padma Shree (2006), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (2009) and Padma Bhushan (2013). Even after giving birth to twins, she made a comeback and for that she gives credit to her husband. Her autobiography ‘Unbreakable’ (2013) and the biopic Mary Kom (2014) are the sources of hope for those who are struggling hard to progress in life.

Initially he denied to train Mary because of her short and fragile physical structure. When he came out of the Centre at late evening, Mary was still standing there, weeping. This type of eagerness and dedication of Mary towards the game changed Narjit Singh’s mind. He agreed to train her. Then she never looked back, and toiled hard to achieve various national and international awards.

(પણ) જ્યારે તે મોડી સાંજે (તાલીમ) કેન્દ્રની બહાર આવ્યા, ત્યારે તેમણે જોયું કે, મૅરી હજુય ત્યાં ઊભી હતી (અને) ૨ડી રહી હતી. આ પ્રકારની રમત પ્રત્યેની મૅરીની ઉત્કંઠા અને તાલાવેલીએ નરજીત સિંઘના વિચારમાં પરિવર્તન આણ્યું. તેઓ તેણીને તાલીમ આપવા સંમત થયા. પછી (તો) તેણીએ કદીયે પાછું વળીને જોયું નહિ, અને વિવિધ રાષ્ટ્રીય તેમજ આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય ખિતાબો મેળવવા કાળી મજૂરી કરી.

મણિપુર રાજ્ય મહિલા મુક્કાબાજ હરીફાઈમાં વિજેતા બનવાની સાથે વર્ષ 2000માં તેણીની મુક્કાબાજ તરીકેની કારકિર્દીની શરૂઆત થઈ ત્યાં સુધી તેણીએ તેનાં માતા-પિતાને તેણીની મુક્કાબાજની તાલીમ વિશે કશુંય જણાવ્યું નહોતું. જ્યારે તેણીએ રાજ્યની સ્પર્ધા જીતી ત્યારે સ્થાનિક વર્તમાનપત્રમાં આવેલો તેનો ફોટો તેના પિતાએ જોયો. તેમણે તેણીને (ખૂબ જ) ગંભીરતાથી ઠપકો આપ્યો અને મુક્કાબાજી છોડી દેવા સૂચના આપી. કારણ કે તેમણે માની લીધું કે તેમના માટે તેણીનો (યોગ્ય જીવનસાથી શોધવાનું મુશ્કેલ બની જશે.

મહામહેનતે તેણી આ રમત ચાલુ રાખવાનું તેણીના પિતાને ગળે ઉતારી શકી. તેણીએ અવેતન મુક્કાબાજી અને વ્યાવસાયિક મુક્કાબાજી વચ્ચેનો ભેદ (તેણીના પિતાના મનમાં સ્પષ્ટ કર્યો. તેણીએ અવેતન મુક્કાબાજી વિશેના નિયમો વિશે તેમને કહ્યું કે, જો (આ પ્રકારની મુક્કાબાજીમાં) કોઈ ઈજા થાય, તો રેફરી (નિર્ણાયક) ખેલ અટકાવી દે છે. ત્યારબાદ તેણીના કુટુંબે તેણીને કારકિર્દીમાં આગળ વધવા પૂર્ણ સહયોગ કર્યો.

સ્ત્રી હોવાને લીધે તેણીએ ઘણો સંઘર્ષ કરવો પડ્યો. તેણીના માટે રિંગની અંદરના સ્પર્ધકો સામે જેટલો સંઘર્ષ કરવાનો થાય તેટલો જ (સંઘર્ષ) રિંગની બહાર હેપ (પક્ષપાત) અને પડકારોને તાબે નહિ થવા સતત કરતું રહેવું પડ્યું. તેણીએ મુક્ત મને સ્વીકાર્યું કે જ્યારે તેણીએ શરૂઆત કરી ત્યારે તેણીને કોઈ પ્રોત્સાહન કે સહકાર મળ્યો નહોતો. અતિશય મુશ્કેલ એ હતું, કારણ કે તેણી એક ગરીબ કુટુંબમાંથી આવતી હતી અને તેણીએ શરૂઆતનાં 4થી 5 વર્ષ ખૂબ જ મુશ્કેલીઓ વેઠવી પડી. તેણીએ એ દિવસો યાદ કર્યા જ્યારે તેણી પાસે એક પેપર કીટ કે સારાં જૂતાં ખરીદવા પૈસા નહોતા અને તેણીએ બસ કે ટ્રેન દ્વારા લાંબા અંતરની મુસાફરી કરવી પડતી.

કાળક્રમે (ધીમે ધીમે) તેણીના કઠોર પરિશ્રમે તેને રાષ્ટ્રીય તેમજ આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય કક્ષાએ ઝળહળતી સિદ્ધિ અપાવી. તેણી એક વાર નહિ. પરંતુ સતત પાંચ વાર વિશ્વ મુક્કાબાજ ચેમ્પિયન બની, તેણીએ 2010માં ગુઆન્ઝો, ચીન ખાતે યોજાયેલી એશિયન રમતોમાં અને 2012માં લંડન, યુ.કે. ખાતે યોજાયેલ ઑલિમ્પિક્સમાં કાંસ્યપદક અને 2014માં ઇન્ડિાઓન, દક્ષિણ કોરિયા ખાતે યોજાયેલ એશિયન રમતોમાં સુવર્ણપદક હાંસલ કર્યો.

તેણીની ભવ્ય સફળતાની કદર કરતાં ભારત સરકારે 2003માં તેણીને અર્જુન ઍવોર્ડ, 2006માં પદ્મશ્રી ઍવોર્ડ, 2009માં રાજીવ ગાંધી ખેલરત્ન ઍવોર્ડ અને 2013માં પદ્મભૂષણ ઍવોર્ડથી સમ્માનિત કરી.

તેણીની સૌથી મહાન સિદ્ધિ તો એ ગણાય કે તેણીએ સર્જરી કરાવીને બે જોડિયાં બાળકોને જન્મ આપ્યા બાદ તેણીને સફળતા મળી. તેણીએ નિખાલસતાથી કબૂલ્યું, “હું બે વર્ષ રિંગની બહાર રહી હતી તેથી પરત ફરવું મુશ્કેલ હતું. મારી શારીરિક ક્ષમતા પરત મેળવવી મુશ્કેલ હતી. કોઈએ આશા રાખી નહોતી કે હું જીતીશ. અરે, મારાં માતા-પિતાએ પણ આ (જીત) શક્ય બનશે તેવું નહોતું ધાર્યું.” તેણીએ તેના આ પરત ફરવાનો યશ તેણીના પતિને આપ્યો, “મારા પતિએ (કે. ઓન્લર કૉમ) મને રોકી નહિ. મોટા ભાગના ભારતીય પુરુષો (પતિઓ) તેમની પત્નીઓને લગ્ન બાદ કે બાળકો થયા બાદ કામ કરવાની છૂટ આપતા નથી. પણ મારા પતિએ મને હું ઇચ્છું ત્યાં સુધી રમતા રહેવાની છૂટ આપી.”

જે લોકો તેના પગલે ચાલવા ઇચ્છતા હોય તે અનેક માટે ભારતમાં મહિલા મુક્કાબાજીની પથપ્રદર્શક મૅરી પ્રેરણારૂપ છે, જે લોકો જીવનમાં પ્રગતિ માટે કઠોર સંઘર્ષ કરતા હોય તેમને માટે તેણીની આત્મકથા અનબ્રેકેબલ (2013) અને ફિલ્મ મૅરી કૉમ (2014) આશાનાં સ્રોત છે.

‘પ્રભાવકારી મેરી’ તરીકે જાણીતી તેણી આજે પણ તેણીના માર્ગમાં અવરોધરૂપ અડચણોને પરાસ્ત કરવા દઢનિશ્ચયી છે, તેણીની સિદ્ધિઓ અને ભવિષ્યના કાર્યક્ષેત્ર માટે તે કહે છે, “મને ભારત માટે કાંઈક વિશિષ્ટ કરી ચૂક્વાનું ગૌરવ છે. અને જો હું ભવિષ્યમાં (પણ) કાંઈક વિશેષ કરી શકીશ તો તે મોટી વાત હશે. હું સખત મહેનત કરું છું અને પૂરા ધ્યાનથી તાલીમ મેળવું છું. અલબત્ત, મને મારા કુટુંબ અને મારાં બાળકોની ખોટ સાલે છે. મને તેમની ખૂબ જ ખોટ સાલે છે. પણ મારે મારા દેશ માટે આ બલિદાન તો આપવું જ રહ્યું અને હું મારી સર્વોત્તમ ક્ષમતાથી કામ કરતી રહીશ.”
