Actually Valentin belonged to Paris. But he manages to follow Flambeau’s trail around London. Eventually, Valentin reaches Hampstead Heath where he finds the simple looking priest along with a tall one and hears their conversation.

Father Brown is a Roman Catholic priest. He is very intelligent and smart all through but appears foolish both to Valentin and the criminal Flambeau. He puts salt in the sugar bowl in a restaurant. He splashes soup on the restaurant walls. He breaks a window in another restaurant. He increases the amount of the bill three times.

He also changes price lables of oranges and nuts. All these things he does deliberately to create a trail for the police. Then he starts talking with the tall priest, i.e., Flambeau. When Flambeau says that he has got the original blue cross with him Father Brown laughs it out and says that he knew the old tricks.

Father Brown also tells him about the practice of criminals to keep spiked bracelets up their sleeves. Father Brown is even not afraid of Flambeau’s threats as he had already switched it with the sweet box at Candy’s shop and managed to sent it back at its original place.

પેલા ઠીંગણા પાદરીએ થોથવાતાં કહ્યું, “શું … શું… તું ચોક્કસ છે?”ક્લેમ્બ આનંદની કિકિયારી પાડી ઊઠ્યો. “હા, તું બાંઠિયા, હું સો ટકા સાચો જ છું. મારામાં (એટલી તો બુદ્ધિ હતી જ કે હું સાચા ક્રૂસની નલ બનાવી શકું. હવે, મિત્ર, તારી પાસે નકલી (ભૂસ) છે અને મારી પાસે (અસલ) મોતી છે. ક્લેબોએ તેના (કોટના અંદરના ગજવામાંથી એક બદામી રંગના કાગળની કરન્સી નોટ કાઢી અને તેના ટુકડેટુકડા કરી નાખ્યા. ગજવામાં કાગળ અને પેન્સિલ સિવાય કશું નહોતું. તે કૂદ્યો અને બરાડી ઊઠ્યો : “હું (તારી વાત) માનતો નથી, તારા જેવો ભૂખે આવી ચાલાકી કરી શકે એમ હું માનતો નથી. અત્યારે પણ તારી પાસે કુસ છે જ અને જો તું આપી નહિ દે, તો હું તે બળજબરીથી આંચકી લઈશ.”

“ના’ ફાધર બ્રાઉને સાહજિક્તાથી કહ્યું અને ઊભા પણ થઈ ગયા, “તું બળજબરીથી આંચકી શકીશ નહિ, પહેલાં તો, એ હજુ મારી પાસે છે નહિ, અને બીજું કે આપણે એકલા નથી.”ફ્લેખ એકાએક ઊભો રહી ગયો. પેલા ઝાડની પાછળ”, આંગળી ચીંધતાં ફાધર બ્રાઉને કહ્યું, “બે પડછંદ પોલીસમેન અને મહાન ગુનાશોધવાવાળા મોજૂદ છે. તું પૂછીશ કે તે અહીં કેવી રીતે આવ્યા? હું તેમને લાવ્યો, અલબત્ત !

મેં અદલાબદલી (પાર્સલની) કરી લીધી અને તું ચૂપ રહ્યો. કોઈ પણ માલસ સામાન્ય રીતે તેનું બિલ ત્રણગણું વધારે મોટું હોય તો આ બદલતાં વાંધો ઉઠાવે જ. જો તે ધ્યાન દીધા વગર ચૂકવી દે છે, તો તેની પાછળ કોઈક (બદઇરાદો જરૂર હોવાનો, મેં તારું બિલ વધારી દીધું અને તેં એ ચૂકવી પણ દીધું.” – બધાને એમ હતું કે આ પરિસ્થિતિમાં) ફ્લેખ વાધની જેમ – ઊછળશે. પણ જાણે જાદુ થયો હોય તેમ એ સ્થિર ઊભો રહ્યો, તે – કુતૂહલથી આશ્ચર્યમૂઢ થઈ ચૂક્યો હતો. તેના મોંમાથી શૉ સરી – પડ્યા, “હું બાંઠિયા પાદરીની ચાલાકીનો ભોગ બનવા કરતાં મરવાનું ! : (વધારે) પસંદ કરીશ.”

‘વારુ,’ ફાધર બ્રાઉને બોલવાનું ચાલુ રાખ્યું, “જેવી રીતે તું : પોલીસ માટે કોઈ પગેરું (નિશાની) છોડતો નથી, તો કોઈકે તો કાંઈક : કરવું પડે ને ! અમે દરેક સ્થળે જ્યાં પણ ગયા છીએ ત્યાં મેં એવું – કશુંક (જરૂર તો જરૂર કર્યું (જ) છે જેની વાતો લોકો જે-તે દિવસના – શેષ ભાગમાં કર્યા જ કરે. મેં વધારે કાંઈ નુકસાન કર્યું નથી – બસ = થોડીક દવાલ બગાડી, થોડાંક સફરજન ઊંધાં વાળ્યાં, અને એક બારી : તોડી, પરંતુ મેં ફૂસ બચાવી લીધો. તે અત્યાર સુધીમાં તો વેસ્ટમિન્સ્ટર (પહોંચી ચૂક્યો છે. ક્લે એ પૂછી વાળ્યું, “તમે આ બધી ગુનેગારોની ચાલાકીઓને : કેવી રીતે જાણં છો?” પ્રતિસ્પર્ધી પાદરીના મામૂલી ચહેરા પર હાસ્યની ઝાંખી ફેલાઈ.

“અરે! ભાઈ હું ધારું છું કે મૂખ પાદરી બનીને,” તેણે કહ્યું.  તને નથી લાગતું કે જે માણસ લોકોનાં સાચાં પાપ સાંભળતો હોય  (કન્વેશનમાં) તે તમામ માનવીય દુર્ગુર્વાથી વાકેફ હોય? અને એથીય  વધીને મારા વ્યવસાયના બીજા પાસાએ મને ખાતરી કરી આપી કે તું (તો) પાદરી હતો જ નહિ.” “શું … ઉં?” હતપ્રભ થઈ ગયેલા ગુનેગારે પૂછવું.

“તર્ક પર તેં હુમલો કર્યો”, ફાધર બ્રાઉને કહ્યું. “ખોટી પદ્ધતિ  છે એ.” અને જેવો તે પોતાની ચીજવસ્તુઓ લેવા ફર્યો કે તરત જ ઝાડ ર નીચેથી ત્રણ પોલીસવાળા બહાર આવ્યા. લૅમ્બો એક કલાકાર અને ખેલાડી હતો, તે ગર્વભેર (એકાદ) ડગલું પાછળ હટેડ્યો અને વૅલૅન્ટિનને કે માથું ઝુકાવી માન આપ્યું.  “ભાઈ મારા”, કાચ જેવી સ્પષ્ટતા સાથે વૈલેન્ટિને કહ્યું, “મને 3 વંદન ન કર.” “આવ, આપણે બંને આપણા માલિક(ઈસુ)ને વંદન કરીએ.”
