In the last two lines, adult is now asking the child to make up his/her own mind and take decision by himself / herself to be independent which is unreasonable because till that time the adults were not Eillowing the child to take any decision on its own and they were always taking decision for the child. The grown-ups say such kind of things to their children in order to teach them good manners. They want their children to be a responsible citizen and behave good in public. Yes, it is important to teach the children all these things so that they learn good manners and know how to behave in society, at home and with their elders and ‘ youngsters. Our elders are our teachers and we can learn a lot from their experience.

Don’t dictate and impose your rules. Your ways and thinking is different from ours and so are the times.

Chivvy Summary:
Parents and teachers always nag the children with dos and don’ts. Most of these imperatives are meaningless. They are preconceived and contradictory. The poem, Chivvy is an eye-opener to such a behaviour.
‘Chivvy’ is a short poem by Michael Rosen which is focused on the unreasonable behaviour and comments given by adults for the children. Children Eire advised and instructed to do every little thing as per what the adults say, like pull your socks up, don’t drag your feet, don’t speak when your mouth is full and things like that. In the concluding lines, there is a question which seems a mismatch with the rest of the poem, i.e. ‘Can you make your mind up about anything ?’ It seems ridiculous as in the first place children Eire interfered in sill aspects of life and then they are expected to take their own decisions.
